A web-server is a combination of hardware which hosts websites and software which runs on such a machine. Usually a web-server is a high end machine with significant capacity, large RAM and a fast processor to manage list of requests at a time. Coupled with it is the heart of the server which is the software. The basic function of the software is to process request from the browser and respond with correct information.

Despite the simplified definition, the function of a web-server is not limited to web-hosting but also FTP, email, database etc. Hence more often than not end-users seek an integrated solution to a stand- alone answer.

Few features to consider before you go LIVE:

  1. Service Support – the key to smooth work flow is being proactive, and hence before you begin, have the best solution provider at your side.
  2. Traffic volume - A small or medium web site will consume between 1GB and 5GB of data transfer per month. You can calculate this by multiplying your average page size with the number of expected page views per month. If your average page size is 30KB and you expect 50,000 page views per month, you will need 0.03MB x 50,000 = 1.5GB.
  3. How Much Disk Space - A small or medium web site will need between 10 and 100MB of disk space. If you look at the size of HTML pages, you will see that the average size is very small. But if you look at the size of the images (button, gif, banner, jpg) used inside the pages, you will often find images many times larger than the page itself. Expect each HTML page to take up between 5 and 50KB of disk space on your web server, depending on the use of images or other space consuming elements. If you plan to use lots of images or graphic elements (not to mention sound files or movies), you might need much more disk space.
  4. Bandwidth Throttling: Bandwidth throttling is often used in Internet applications, in order to spread a load over a wider network to reduce local network congestion, or over a number of servers to avoid overloading individual ones, and so reduce their risk of crashing.
  5. Server-Side Scripting: Server-side scripting is a web server technology in which a user’s request is fulfilled by running a script directly on the web server to generate dynamic web pages. It is usually used to provide interactive web sites that interface to databases or other data stores. This is different from client-side scripting where scripts are run by the viewing web browser, usually in JavaScript. The primary advantage to server-side scripting is the ability to highly customize the response based on the user’s requirements, access rights, or queries into data stores.
  6. Daily Backup - Make sure you have definite plans for secure and optimal backup support.
